River Oaks Real Estate Information
The affluent River Oaks community is located near the heart of downtown Houston and is situated inside the I-610 loop and is halfway between the downtown and uptown regions of the city. Considered one of the wealthiest communities in Texas, River Oaks is also one of the wealthiest zip codes in the United States with some area real estate worth as much as $20 million. A well-examined example for community planning and construction, several other neighborhoods in Texas and throughout the nation are modeled around the River Oaks set-up. Spanning 11,000 acres in an area bounded by Buffalo Bayou and several surrounding areas, River Oaks is northeast of uptown, north of Upper Kirby, west of Montrose, and adjacent to the freeway system.
Area properties are situated close to the Neartown Shopping Center. The area includes the River Oaks Theatre, an arthouse theater. The interesting facility is the last historic movie theater still being used as it was originally designed. River Oaks also hosts its own chamber orchestra, comprised of forty members and composed of musicians from around the United States.
The River Oaks Country Club and Golf Course, designed by Donald Ross, is in the northern portion of River Oaks and is one of the best places to golf in the southern United States. Opened in 1923, the facility has hosted a number of different tournaments throughout the years. For non-golfers, Memorial Park is a large urban park complex that includes a number of athletic facilities. This is in addition to River Oaks Park that is comprised of an off-road trail, tennis courts, a playground, and lit sports fields. Although River Oaks’ primary newspaper is the Houston Chronicle, the area also has several smaller papers, including the River Oaks Examiner and the Village News.
Students of River Oaks are served by the Houston Independent School District. River Oaks Elementary School, Lanier Middle School, and Lamar High school are the area’s primary places of study. For families with especially young children, the Crockett Early Childhood Center is the closest public early childhood center to River Oaks. Besides the excellent public education system, there are several private institutions in the community, including St. Thomas High School, St. Anne Catholic School, River Oaks Baptist School, Episcopal High School, and the Kinkaid School. University of St. Thomas in Neartown and Rice University in the Houston Museum District are also nearby.
